Velcro Extender for Kids’ Shoes: Durable and Affordable
Are you frustrated because your child’s velcro straps never seem to reach far enough to close properly on their shoes? Many parents run into this — especially if their kids wear orthotics like AFOs or SMOs. Or, they may have unique foot shapes such as extra wide feet. In these cases, even the roomiest shoes can fall short when it comes to velcro length. That’s where velcro extenders come in: a simple, affordable way to get a secure, comfortable fit without buying an entirely different shoe. Take a look at the images below — do they look familiar?

When it comes to choosing a velcro extender, durability and affordability matter most. You want something that holds up to daily wear without costing more than the problem is worth.
My Top Recommendation for Velcro Extenders
There’s a genuinely good velcro extender option suited to kids’ shoes that makes those frustrating gaps a thing of the past. Plus, you don’t need to track one down at a specialty shoe store to get it.

Additional Helpful Resources
For parents looking for more guidance on children’s footwear beyond this fix, here are two related resources:
Shoes for AFOs. Finding the right shoe to accommodate an AFO can be tricky on its own. Look for supportive shoes with a wide opening, removable insoles, and enough depth to fit the orthotic comfortably. Additionally, a velcro extender can help you get the rest of the way to a secure fit.
Extra Wide Shoes for Kids. Children with very wide feet need shoes that offer real space without giving up support. Check out my recommended extra wide shoe brands, and consider pairing them with an extender for an even better fit.

Any suggestions for shoes for a toddler with chipmunk inserts?
Hello Domenica,
Shoes with laces typically work best for accommodating orthotics, as they provide a more secure and adjustable fit. If you can let me know your child’s shoe size and the country you’re contacting me from, I’d be happy to recommend some specific options that could work well!
Also, are you open to trying lace-up styles, or would you prefer sticking with Velcro closures? Just let me know what works best for you, and I’ll tailor my suggestions accordingly.
Hi! Than you. Would love suggestions. He is 1.5 and Velcro is easiest for this. I have tried see Kai run Velcro but the shoe isn’t breathable and is foot is wet by the end of the day. I have an order for new balance wide 574 coming. His foot measures 4.5 inches. I would like something breathable since the chipmunk orthotic is foam and not breathable.
Hi Domenica,
Thanks so much for your question!
Based on the measurement you provided (4 1/2 inches), your son would likely do well in a size 5 shoe to allow for the right amount of growing room and to fit his Chipmunk orthotics comfortably. Depending on how the orthotic was fitted, a size 5 1/2 might also work—so it’s worth checking both options for the best fit.
The New Balance 574 is a solid choice! Just a quick heads-up: it does have suede, which can be a bit less breathable—especially if you’re looking for something cooler and more comfortable for everyday wear.
Here are two other shoes I’d recommend that offer great breathability and support:
Option 1
Option 2
