What are the Best Tsukihoshi Shoes for Kids? – The Top 7 Most Supportive, Lightweight, and Durable Styles!

Editor’s Note: This post has been updated and revised for accuracy on May 2022 and reflects up-to-date information on what are the best Tsukihoshi shoes for kids?

Do you have a preference for the shoe brand Tsukihoshi? Maybe a family member or a friend suggested this shoe brand for your child. Tsukihoshi manufactures awesome kids’ shoes that are functional comfortable, and durable.

One common question parents ask me is what are the best Tsukihoshi shoes for kids? I can tell you that there are many styles among this shoe brand, and some of them are definitely better than others in terms of fit, comfort, and support.

My Experience Fitting Children’s Shoes

I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over 10 years now that focuses in children with “complicated” foot shapes as well as foot and leg problems but provides regular shoe fittings as well. Over the years I got familiar with the best Tsukihoshi shoes for kids.

All Tsukihoshi shoes fit a little bit differently —some fit wider than others— provide different levels of support, and I have also noticed that some of their styles provide more padding around the ankles.

Tsukihoshi is my go-to shoe brand for children with wide feet and children who have sensory issues, as the shoes are made from very soft materials that help increase comfort.

What Makes the Tsukihoshi Shoes I Recommend the Best Choice for Kids?

✅ Lightweight and Flexible: Tsukihoshi shoes are supportive, but they are lightweight and flexible at the same time, which helps promote natural foot movement. Tsukihoshi shoes are some of the most lightweight and flexible shoes that I have fitted before.

✅ Round Toe-Boxes: This feature allows your kids’ toes to have the appropriate space around them. This is a very important feature as when the toes have space around them they are allowed to instinctively grip the ground, providing your children with better balance. When toes are allowed to move freely, they contribute to healthy arch development and they allow soft bones and cartilage to align naturally throughout their delicate growing process.

✅ Easy On & Off: Parents love how easy it is for children to put these shoes on by themselves and easily take them off. Most Tsukihoshi open up widely, which allows children to easily slide their feet inside the shoes. In some styles the one side of the tongue is completely detached, allowing the shoe to open widely.

✅ Breathable/Antibacterial Removable Sole/Machine Washable: Tsukihoshi shoes are extremely breathable. If you are struggling with your child’s sweaty and smelly feet, these shoes help reduce the sweat —as they come with an antibacterial insole and you can always throw the shoes in the washing machine— this will kill any remaining bacteria. Tsukihoshi was actually one of the first shoe brands that introduced machine washable shoes.

✅ Durable: Tsukihoshi shoes are durable and your children will likely outgrow these shoes before they wear them out.

✅ Heel Stabilizer: The shoes provide firm heel counters for optimum stability.

Orthotic Friendly: Some of the Tsukihoshi shoes I recommend are capable of fitting orthotics.

What Foot Shapes Can Tsukihoshi Shoes Fit?

Tsukihoshi shoes can fit children with medium and wide feet. Some styles can even accommodate the shape of children with extra wide feet.

I have put together a list of the best Tsukihoshi shoes for kids. However, before you order any shoes online, you must know your child’s exact foot length and foot shape.

Parents across the country are increasingly ordering their children’s shoes online—regrettably, without the benefit of proper shoe fittings—because most specialty children’s shoe stores nationally are closing their doors.

What Shoe Size You Should Order?

All of these shoes fit “long”, which means that you need to get the same size that your child measures on the standard foot measuring scale (Brannock Device) to allow for growing room. I know this might sound confusing but Tsukihoshi shoes fit really long and you don’t need to order the shoes in a larger size.

Can Tsukihoshi Shoes Accommodate Orthotics?

Yes, some of their styles can definitely accommodate an orthotic whether it’s a full length, 3/4 length, SMO, or even AFO. DO not hesitate to contact me via email if your child wears orthotics and you are unsure about which style will work better for your child’s feet:

Tsukihoshi has actually become a favorite for Pedorthists looking to make modifications to accommodate customized orthotics and/or AFO’s.

Keep in mind that I always recommend shoes with shoelaces instead of shoes with velcro closure when it comes to fitting an orthotic. Shoelaces help keep the orthotic in place and will provide your child with better support and stability compared to an alternative closure.

  1. Just wondering what the difference is between Mako, Storm, Velocity and Speed. Mako seems different in particular with a smaller appearing sole. Thanks!

    • Hello Jen,

You are correct, the Mako is one of the lightest styles and provides an outsole that is not as substantial or supportive compared to the other styles that you mentioned.

The other styles that you mentioned are pretty similar in terms of support.
