What Are the Best Tsukihoshi Shoes for Kids? – The Top 7 Most Supportive, Lightweight, and Durable Styles!
Has a friend or family member suggested the shoe brand Tsukihoshi for your child? Have you been looking at their shoe line but you are unsure about which specific one to choose for your child? I can tell you that there are many styles in this shoe brand, and some of them are definitely better than others in terms of fit, comfort, and support. Tsukihoshi is my go-to shoe brand for children with wide feet and children who have sensory issues, as the shoes are made from very soft materials that help increase comfort.
Why Choose Tsukihoshi Shoes for Your Child?
1️⃣ Lightweight and Flexible: Tsukihoshi shoes are supportive, but they are lightweight and flexible at the same time, which helps promote natural foot movement. Tsukihoshi shoes are some of the most lightweight and flexible shoes that I have fitted before.
2️⃣ Round Toe-Boxes: This feature allows your kids’ toes to have the appropriate space around them. This is a very important feature as when the toes have space around them they are allowed to instinctively grip the ground, providing your children with better balance. When toes are allowed to move freely, they contribute to healthy arch development and they allow soft bones and cartilage to align naturally throughout their delicate growing process.
3️⃣ Easy On & Off: Parents love how easy it is for children to put these shoes on by themselves and easily take them off. Most Tsukihoshi shoes open up widely, which allows children to easily slide their feet inside the shoes. In some styles the one side of the tongue is completely detached, allowing the shoe to open widely.
4️⃣ Breathable/Antibacterial Removable Sole/Machine Washable: Tsukihoshi shoes are extremely breathable. If you are struggling with your child’s sweaty and smelly feet, these shoes help reduce the sweat —as they come with an antibacterial insole and you can always throw the shoes in the washing machine— this will kill any remaining bacteria. Tsukihoshi was actually one of the first shoe brands to introduce machine-washable shoes.
5️⃣ Durable: Tsukihoshi shoes are durable and your children will likely outgrow these shoes before they wear them out.
What Foot Shapes Can Tsukihoshi Shoes Fit?
Tsukihoshi shoes can fit children with medium and wide feet, and they also work well for children with high insteps.
Tsukihoshi Shoes for Kids with Sensory Issues
All of the Tsukihoshi shoes I recommend provide seamless interiors that help minimize irritation, while the soft, flexible materials provide a gentle fit that accommodates sensory sensitivities.
What Are the Best Tsukihoshi Shoes for Kids?
All Tsukihoshi shoes fit a little bit differently —some fit wider than others— and provide different levels of support, and I have also noticed that some of their styles provide more padding around the ankles. What Shoe Size You Should Order?
All of these shoes fit “long”, which means that you need to get the same size that your child measures on the standard foot measuring scale (Brannock Device) to allow for growing room. I know this might sound confusing but Tsukihoshi shoes fit really long and you don’t need to order the shoes in a larger size to allow for growing room.
How to Retrieve Your Child’s Exact Foot Length and Shape
Parents across the country are increasingly ordering their children’s shoes online—regrettably, without the benefit of proper shoe fittings—because most specialty children’s shoe stores nationally are closing their doors. I created a free virtual shoe fitting service that will help you determine your child’s exact shoe size and whether your child has a high instep.
Can Tsukihoshi Shoes Accommodate Orthotics?
Yes, some of their styles can definitely accommodate an orthotic whether it’s a full length, 3/4 length, SMO, or even AFO. Do not hesitate to contact me via email if your child wears orthotics and you are unsure about which style will work better for your child’s feet:

Tsukihoshi has actually become a favorite for Pedorthists looking to make modifications to accommodate customized orthotics and/or AFOs. I created a different resource that describes the best Tsukihoshi sneakers for children who wear orthotics.
Keep in mind that I always recommend shoes with shoelaces instead of shoes with velcro closure when it comes to fitting an orthotic. Shoelaces help keep the orthotic in place and will provide your child with better support and stability compared to an alternative closure.
What Are the Best Tsukihoshi Boots?
I created an additional resource that describes the best seasonal shoes made by Tsukihoshi such as boots.
Tsukihoshi shoes are a fantastic choice for parents seeking comfortable, supportive, and stylish footwear for their children. With options catering to everyday wear, special occasions, and children with sensory issues, there’s a Tsukihoshi shoe to meet every need. By selecting the right pair, you’re supporting your child’s foot health and ensuring they stay comfortable and happy throughout their day.
The only two models you noted as having a “generous toe box” were in the Little Kids size range.
What Big Kids size model has the most room in the toe box?
I used to buy Altra for my sons but Altra stopped making kids shoes. I heard Tsukihoshi might be a good alternative. My kids have wide toes but narrow heels and this year my oldest is running cross country.
Hello Mary,
What shoe size does your son wear? If your son has narrow heels and a wider forefoot then I don’t suggest buying Tsukihoshi shoes, as they will probably be too wide around his heels. In addition, if your son is into cross country, then he will need an actual running shoe.
If you tell me what shoe size your son wears and the country that you are contacting me from I am happy to provide you with specific shoe recommendations that will accommodate his wide feet and narrow heels.
Just wondering what the difference is between Mako, Storm, Velocity and Speed. Mako seems different in particular with a smaller appearing sole. Thanks!
Hello Jen,
You are correct, the Mako is one of the lightest styles and provides an outsole that is not as substantial or supportive compared to the other styles that you mentioned.
The other styles that you mentioned are pretty similar in terms of support.
