Wide Width Toddler Boots – Best Boots for Toddlers with Wide Feet

Editor’s Note: This post has been updated and revised for accuracy on March 2022 and reflects an up-to-date selection of the best wide width toddler boots.

Are you having a hard time finding a pair of winter boots that are wide enough for your toddler’s feet? Do you always struggle to get your toddler’s boots on and off and can’t tell whether the boots are fitting your toddler’s feet correctly? I have put together a list of the best wide width toddler boots that can fit toddlers with wide or extra wide feet.

My Experience Fitting Children’s Shoes

I have been fitting children’s shoes for the last 10 years working for a specialized children’s shoe store that focuses on helping children with “complicated” foot shapes as well as foot conditions. Over the years I became familiar with the best wide width toddler boots.

I have noticed that most toddlers that come to the shoe store have wide or extra wide feet. Sometimes this is because they are still carrying baby fat, and their feet usually start narrowing down as they grow.

Do They Make Wide Boots for Toddlers?

The selection of boots for toddlers with wide feet is limited, but all you need is one pair of boots that fit your toddler’s feet properly to keep your toddler’s feet and legs healthy during the winter season.

There are 3 shoe brands that offer wide width boots for toddlers. However, among each shoe brand, certain boots are a lot more effective in fitting toddlers with wide feet.

What are the Best Shoe Brands that Manufacture Wide Width Boots for Toddlers?

The best shoe brands that manufacture wide width boots for toddlers are:

  • Stride Rite
  • Pediped
  • Merrell

These 3 shoe brands manufacture toddler boots that come labeled as wide (W) and extra wide (XW). However, there are other shoe brands that even though they don’t manufacture boots in actual wide widths (W), they are capable of fitting the shape of a wide foot. You can find some examples below:

  • Tsukihoshi
  • See Kai Run
  • Bogs

What Makes the Boots that I Recommend Effective for Toddlers with Wide Feet?

In addition to being available in wide widths (W), the boots that I recommend provide these 2 important features:

✅ Rounder Toe-Boxes: This feature helps prevent your toddler’s toes from overlapping against one another or the side of the boots. The boots below are the same length and width, but do you notice how the boot on the right has a rounder toe-box compared to the boot on the left?

✅ Extra Depth: This feature allows the toddler’s feet to sit deeply inside the boots and prevent the top part of the feet (instep) from rubbing against the top part of the boots. The boots below are the same size, but do you notice how the boot on the right is a lot deeper compared to the boot on the left?

Do You Know If Your Toddler Has a High Instep?

Some toddlers in addition to having wide feet have a high instep. The instep is the top part of the foot, and when it’s high, it makes it a lot more challenging to find shoes that fit. Take a look at the image below to better visualize where the instep of the foot is located:

How to Retrieve Your Toddler’s Exact Foot Length and Shape

If you are unsure of your toddler’s exact foot shape (wide, extra wide, high instep), or if you need help figuring out what shoe size you need to order online, I suggest that you take a look at the resource below:

A lot of families from all over the world are taking advantage of this resource as most specialized children’s shoe stores have been closing down. Even before the pandemic hit, there were only a few specialized children’s shoe stores left in the country.

Let’s now take a look at the best wide width toddler boots. Disclosure: Keep in mind that we may receive commissions when you click our links and make purchases.

Best Wide Width Toddler Boots ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Some of the boots below are available in wide widths (W) while some others fit wide. Take a look at the description below the image of each boot to find out whether that specific boot is waterproof and can be used in the rain and/or the snow.

Many of the boots featured above come in several color options, so if you want the boots to be made of a specific color, please make sure to click through and see if they are available in that specific color.

  • All of these boots open up widely so they are easy to get on and off.
  • Some of these boots are machine washable.
  • All of these boots are lightweight and flexible.
  • All of these boots provide good traction to help prevent your toddler from slipping and falling.
  • All of these boots come with a velcro strap for easy adjustability. Don’t be afraid of pulling the velcro straps tightly as this will help provide your toddler with better stability.

What Boot Size Should I Order?

In each of the descriptions of the shoes I indicate whether you need to order a half a size or a whole size bigger than your child’s foot size to provide the correct amount of growing room.

Most boots are not available in half sizes, they are available in whole sizes online. This means that if your toddler is “in between sizes” you should order a size up. Take a look at the examples below:

  • If your toddler’s feet measure a shoe size 7, I suggest getting the boots in a shoe size 8.
  • If your toddler’s feet measure a shoe size 7 1/2, I suggest getting the boots in a shoe size 8 as well.

Make sure that you try the boots with the same socks that your toddler will be wearing with the boots.

Are Any Other Boot Choices Available?

I have fitted other boots that have worked well for toddlers with wide or extra wide feet, but the ones I recommended above are the widest ones. Do not hesitate to contact me if you are having a hard time finding a different pair of shoes for your toddler’s wide feet:

What Socks Work Best for Toddlers with Wide Feet?

Socks play a key role in keeping your toddler’s feet healthy, as they act as a barrier between your toddler’s feet and the shoes, and they also prevent the formation and the build-up of bacteria inside the shoes.

My favorite sock material for winter socks for toddlers with wide feet is Merino wool. This material will keep your toddler’s feet warm and comfortable during the winter season and you won’t have to worry about your toddler’s feet getting cold or sweating excessively.
