Fitting Children's Shoes

The Best Kids’ Shoes for Extra Wide Feet ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Do you have a child with extra wide feet and a high instep and you always have a hard time finding shoes that fit?

I have been fitting children’s shoes and orthotics for the last 10 years at a premier children’s shoe store specializing in children with foot and leg problems, but our store provides regular shoe fittings as well.

We carry some of the most supportive children’s shoes and orthotics, and I am familiar with the shoe brands and styles that are ideal for use with these orthotics.

For the last 5 years I have been helping parents find the correct pair of shoes for their kids online.

These are the best shoes for children with extra wide feet since in addition to being labeled as  extra wide (XW), they are also the deepest shoes with the roundest toe-boxes that I have fitted before. These shoes are also capable of fitting children with high insteps.

I only review shoe styles that I have fitted before, since that’s the only way for me to tell how the shoes fit and how well made they are. Disclosure: Keep in mind that we may receive commissions when you click our links and make purchases.

These are hands down the best shoes for children with extra wide feet, high insteps, and also for children who need to wear orthotics inside their shoes

All of these shoes provide extra depth,  meaning that your child’s feet will fit deeply inside the shoes which will prevent the top part of your child’s feet from rubbing against the top part of the shoes.

These shoes also come with rounder toe-boxes, which helps prevent your kids’ toes from overlapping one another or rubbing against the side of the shoes.

Not the best option if your child has a high instep.

This style features:

If you need any other type of shoes such as every day, summer, winter, or sport shoes, you can find them all in a tool I created which lets you filter by the type of shoes you need. This tool is extremely effective since it will show you shoes in different widths such as narrow, medium, wide, and extra wide. I also tell you exactly how each shoe style fits (short, long, narrow, or wide) and will let you filter by the instep of your child’s foot. You can even find shoes that will accommodate an orthotic! You can find that tool here:

  1. Liza,

This is an awesome thing you do for people. Finding these shoes is harder than finding Unicorns!!! I am a teacher and one of my students is busting out of his size 4 youth extra wide shoes. I am trying to get him new size 6 youth extra wide high tops. They need to lace all the way up to help prevent constant removal.

    Thank you for your help,

    1. Hi Jon,

Finding a pair of extra wide shoes for children can be quite a frustrating and time-consuming experience. There was a particular high top shoe style made by New Balance but it got discontinued. Now there is a style made by Adidas that is available in wide widths:

Basketball Shoe for Wide Feet: Option 1

Basketball Shoe for Wide Feet: Option 2

Please note that this shoe style fits “short”, which means that your student might need a size 6 1/2.

      I hope this helps.

  2. Hello,
My boy , 10 years of old has 7 toes on his feet. please suggest a shoe brand , which will be best suitable for my boy.

    Thank you

    1. Hello Liza,

New Balance makes some of the deepest shoe styles with the roundest toe-boxes for kids. The specific shoe styles that I recommend in this article will prevent your son’s toes from rubbing or overlapping against one another. Please make sure that you provide your son with a pair of seamless socks as well.

      1. Thank you so much for your recommendations. Your suggestion to buy seamless socks is appreciable as i didn’t know about it before.
        Thank you
