Has this happened to you before?
-You took your child to the shoe store…
-You got your child’s feet measured by a shoe fitter …
-You took the time to find a shoe style that your child loved…
-You had your child walk and run around the store to test the shoes out…
-Your child said he loved the shoes…
-You decided to go ahead and take the shoes home for your child…
-You get home, and your child starts complaining that the shoes feel too tight!
You are probably asking yourself: How is this possible?! These scenarios tend to happen more often to children who have wide or extra wide feet!
Maybe your kid’s feet swelled on their way home from the shoe store or they liked the shoe style so much that they didn’t say anything before just to keep the shoes.
I have been working at the children’s shoe store for over 6 years now, and certain kids’ have feet that are so wide that they wouldn’t even feel comfortable in the extra wide width shoes.
This is nothing abnormal since a lot of children have extra wide feet and you shouldn’t worry at all. However, it does make the shoe buying process a lot more complicated. In these particular cases, I always stretch the shoes where the widest part of the foot is to relieve the pressure on the foot from the shoes.
Has your child tried the widest shoes available but they still feel tight? I actually wrote a post where I describe the best wide and extra wide shoes for children. Make sure you re providing your child with the correct shoe width before getting a shoe stretcher! The post is called:
What Is A Shoe Stretcher And How Can It Help Your Kids’ Wide Feet?
When you are fitting your child in a pair of extra wide shoes and the shoes are still not wide enough, you need to use a shoe stretcher to stretch the widest part of the shoe.
Parents have asked me this question several times at the children’ shoe store that I work for: Do shoe stretchers work? The answer is: Yes! They become extremely handy when your child has a wide to an extra wide foot.
This brings us to the question of what is a shoe stretcher? A shoe stretcher is a device that can be used to stretch a portion of your shoes. They can be used to stretch a shoe that might be not be wide enough. You can stretch any specific area of the shoe where your kid or even you the parent may be experiencing discomfort such if you have a corn, a bunion or you just need extra space around the toe box for your toes to move around comfortably.
A shoe stretcher will also come handy for children or adults who have a high instep. Do you know what the instep of the foot is? It’s the top part of our foot. When children have a high instep they normally require a wider shoe or a show with a deeper end. If the correct shoe size was chosen to begin with, a shoe stretcher will definitely give you enough room to make the shoes feel more comfortable!
You can find a post I wrote where I describe the best shoes for a child that has a high instep here:
Before you use a shoe stretcher, it is advisable to consider the type of material that you are treating since there are types of materials that simply are not compatible with any shoe stretcher. One good example of a shoe material that may not work with these products include that of vinyl, since there is a major limitation in the flexibility of this material.
The majority types of shoe materials can be used with the stretcher device. These materials include many different types of suede, leather, canvas, and linens. There are a large variety of shoe stretchers in the market today, and it can be confusing to choose the best one. I will show you the one I use at the kids’ shoe store that I work for and that has proven to provide the best results!
