Is your child already walking and running? Once children start being more active, we must provide them with a pair of more substantial shoes to support their feet. The shoes must still be lightweight and flexible, but have more structure than the ones they used to wear when they were learning how to walk.
However, it doesn’t matter how supportive, lightweight, and flexible the shoe that you provide for your child is, if it’s not fitted properly (and by this, I mean finding the correct shoe length AND the correct shoe width), you child won’t get any of the benefits that the shoe has to offer.
If your child has wide or extra wide feet, it makes the whole process of finding shoes that FIT much more complicated. While there are three shoe brands that provide shoes in extra wide widths, we must also make sure that the shoes are deep enough for your child’s feet to FIT and sit comfortably inside the shoe.
I have been working for a children’s shoe store for over 8 years now, and I know everything that relates to children’s shoes and the way they FIT. The shoe store that I work for also focuses on children with foot and leg problems, and we carry only good supportive shoes that come in different width such as narrow, wide, and extra wide (in order to guarantee that we can fit all type of feet).
I always recommend parents to take their children to their local shoe store, where a shoe fitter can properly measure their feet and find shoes accordingly. However, several parents have contacted me asking where and how they can get their kids shoes online, since they don’t have a local shoe store in their area that they trust.
If you must get your children’s shoes online, there is a post I wrote where I describe in detail how to make sure your children’s shoes FIT and you can find it here:
Please be aware that if your child has extra wide feet and you are providing him/her with shoes that are too narrow, you can create all sort of foot issues such as:
- Foot and leg pain.
The most simple way to avoid all of those foot issues is to provide your child with the correct shoe style and the correct shoe size.
If you don’t have a local shoe store in your area, I will describe in this post the best shoes for toddlers with extra wide feet!
Let’s start getting familiar with the best shoe brands for children with extra wide feet.
The Best Shoe Brands For Kids With Extra Wide Feet!
There are three shoe brands that have proven to be the best for children with extra wide feet and they are:
- New Balance
- Stride Rite
All of these shoe brands provide shoes that actually come in extra wide widths. So, if you ever go to a shoe store and the salesperson tells you that they don’t carry shoes in extra wide widths but try to sell you a certain shoe style because it “runs wider than the others”, please don’t settle for that!
If your child has extra wide feet, he/she will need a shoe that actually comes in an EXTRA WIDE width.
It is true that certain shoe styles run wider than others. For example, shoes made by New Balance tend to have a rounder, wider toed-box than Saucony or Stride Rite shoes. This means that if your child has really wide feet, you should always choose New Balance shoes over Saucony or Stride Rite.
Take a look at the difference between a New Balance sneaker and a Saucony one. Do you notice how the New Balance shoe has a much wider, rounder toed-box?
New Balance is our number 1 selling brand for children with extra wide feet. Also, if we need to fit an orthotic inside the shoes we also tend to choose New Balance over any other shoe brand, since this shoe company makes the deepest shoes.
Finding deeper shoes will allow the orthotic to sit further down inside the shoe which means that it won’t raise your kid’s feet up. Sometimes when you fit an orthotic inside the shoe it gives the child the impression that his or her feet are coming out of the shoe. This won’t happen if you find deeper shoes!
The Consequences OF Providing Children With Shoes That Don’t Fit!
Every time you provide your child with shoes that are too short, too long, too wide, or too narrow, you are making your child more prone to developing foot issues such as blisters, calluses, and corns.
Once your children develop any of these foot issues, it will have a direct impact in the way they walk and run. It will change their walk pattern, which might lead them to putting pressure in parts of their feet and leg that they are not supposed, and this tends to lead to foot and leg pain.
Think about it…
Have you ever had to deal with a blister on your feet? If you ever had, you know how painful it can be and you will try to avoid putting pressure in that area of the foot, even if it means walking differently.
Also, please keep in mind that calluses and corns are really hard to get rid of! We must prevent these issues in order to keep our kids’ feet healthy.
Which is the best way to prevent all of these issues? Provide your child with shoes that FIT!
