Best Shoe Size Measuring Device for Kids
The Brannock Device is a classic shoe size tool used in stores for decades. It measures the length and width of the foot and provides a reliable size measurement. Despite its popularity, the Brannock Device has some drawbacks, such as being cumbersome and not easily available for home use.
Key Features of the Brannock Device
The Brannock Device consists of several components:
- Heel-to-Toe Slider: Accurately measures the total length of the foot for a perfect size match.
- Width Bar: Determines how narrow or wide the foot is, ensuring shoes won’t pinch or slip.
- Arch Length Indicator: Measures the distance from the heel to the ball of the foot, crucial for a proper fit and overall comfort.

How to Measure Kids’ Feet with the Brannock Device
Step-by-Step Guide
- Prepare the Child: Have your child stand barefoot on the Brannock Device with their weight evenly distributed.
- Measure Heel-to-Toe Length: Slide the heel cup to the back of the foot and move the toe slider until it touches the longest toe.
- Assess Width: Use the width bar to measure the widest part of the foot, ensuring the foot is not cramped.
- Check Arch Length: Position the arch length indicator at the ball joint of the foot to measure from the heel to the ball of the foot.
Drawbacks of the Brannock Device
It’s important for parents to know that the size shown on a measuring device is just a starting point. Not all shoes fit the same—some run short, long, narrow, or wide. That’s why knowing how each shoe style fits is key to choosing the right size and ensuring your child’s comfort and foot health.

Great post, thanks for bringing to my attention that these are available for mums and dads.I haven’t seen shoe sizers for many years, they were always used on us as kids (that’s a long time ago lol), and I often wondered when my children were growing up why they weren’t used anymore. It’s a pity more shoe shops don’t still use them as I remember our shoes were always comfortable and this would have been due to having our feet measured correctly. I believe these would be a great thing for mums to have on hand.
Nanny,
You make a very valid point. Before, most parents took their children to get their feet measured at their local shoe store, as online shopping was not as popular, at least when it came to shoes. Having your kids feet properly measured is imperative to keep his or her feet, legs, and back healthy. I think every household needs a shoe size measuring device, specially if you don’t have a local shoe store in your area.
Wow, one of the best and most informative websites I have seen so far.
So much information about shoes, I never knew you could learn so much about shoes from toddlers to adults. I wear high heels a lot and I know that even though we love them heels, if we do not wear them the right way we kill our feet and backs alike. Do you perhaps have any details on ladies heels helpful information like the rest you did?
Addie,
I specialize in children shoes. I worked for an adult shoe store but not too long to feel comfortable writing about adult shoes. Start by getting the right shoe size, if the heels still feel uncomfortable, there is always extra padding you can put to reduce the friction in the area of the foot that is suffering more.
Hi Juan
Thanks for the great article, I must say I really like the look of the Brannock Combo just for the convenience that it will work for everyone in my family. My only question is there are several different standards out there for shoe sizing, like US, UK and EUR. Does the Brannock give you a size for each standard?
Thanks again
Dom
Dom,
The Brannock device you are referring to only gives you the US sizing.
Interesting article. I can see the value of each of these measuring tools.
But one of the things you mentioned at the beginning was that parents have a horror of ordering the wrong size shoe for their children. Why is that? What are some of the problems with buying shoes that are just a touch too big or too small?
Jaden,
Shoes that are too small can create all sort of of problems to your kids feet such as bunions, blisters, corns, ingrown toenails, etc. A shoe that is too small can also compromise your child’s stability and make him/her fall more often.
A shoe that is too long can have the same impact of a shoe being too small. If there is too much space in the shoe your kids’ foot will move too much inside it, and it will create friction between your kids’ toes and the shoe. This will also lead to some of the issues mentioned above.
In order to keep our kids’ feet and legs healthy, we must provide them with the right shoe size.
This is a very helpful article because children cannot complain and we don’t know if they feel comfortable or they feel pain in their shoes.
Sometimes, parents don’t spend much attention when selecting their baby’s shoes and this can be dangerous to the little ones. You have a very informative website, I hope more parents could read this.
Thank you. My goal is to inform parents about the importance of well fitted shoes so they can make the most informative decision when buying shoes for their children. Taking care of our kids’ feet at an early age will prevent several foot, leg, and back problems in the future!
