Did you know that shoe companies make kids’soccer shoes in wide and extra wide widths? Soccer is becoming more and more popular in the United States specially among younger children! Boys and girls start playing soccer at a young age, and have lots of fun doing it!
There are a lot of children with wide and extra wide feet, and we must provide them with the right type of shoes! Wearing the right type of soccer cleats is important if we want our children to perform at their best!
STOP fitting your child in cleats that are too long to compensate for the width! This will create several foot and leg problems!
There is no set age for when a child should start wearing soccer specific shoes, but the team’s coach will let you know as soon as your child is ready to wear them! You will notice that as soon as the level of competition gets more intense, the coach will require your child to wear a pair of soccer cleats.
This will help your child learn proper form, since if you pay close attention, you will notice how most sneakers have a wedge, while most soccer cleats are flat. Soccer cleats also have a different shape that emulates the shape of a foot and produces a better feeling every time your child kicks the ball!
- Did you know that you can find soccer cleats in different widths?
- Did you know that some soccer cleats fit narrower than others?
- Did you know that some soccer cleats provide better lateral movement than others?
In this post, I will describe the best soccer cleats for kids’, and why it is important to have them fitted properly. A soccer cleat that is not fitted properly can lead to foot and leg injuries. When your child is playing soccer, he or she is increasing the stress on his feet and legs. A pair of well fitted cleats will allow your child to feel more stable and confident when running on the soccer field!
Some parents let their children wear their everyday sneakers to soccer practice and soccer matches. There is nothing wrong with that, but don’t be surprised if you end up replacing your kids’ everyday sneakers faster than expected! When a child is kicking a ball, the shoe will start wearing down faster. That is why it is important to choose a good, supportive shoe if you plan on using it for multipurpose activities.
Can A Soccer Cleat Help My Child Play Better?
DEFINITELY! While it will not make him a better soccer player, it will definitely help him improve his skills and move more easily in the field! Let’s say you are a parent who likes to workout at the gym and you like to use the treadmill for running. Would you run in the treadmill in something other than your running shoes? There are specific shoes for specific activities/sports for a reason!
Providing your child with the correct soccer cleat size and width will allow your child to play and run comfortably around the field!
Do Soccer Cleats With Velcro Closure Exist?
The majority of soccer cleats come with shoe laces. The reason is that shoe laces provide more support and more STABILITY. This is important because when a child is playing soccer he is running and playing at a different level.
Think about it! You have more control on how tight the shoe laces are, and the tighter you make them, the more stable your child will feel when running. Shoe laces will hug your kids’ feet better than velcro closure. However, there are a selection of soccer cleats that come with velcro closure.
Keep in mind that as soon as your child starts getting serious about playing soccer, you should switch to a pair of cleats with shoe laces!
Do Soccer Cleats In Wide Widths Actually EXIST?
There is only one shoe style that makes soccer cleats in wide widths! Can you imagine playing soccer in a cleats that are too narrow? Imagine the pain your child might experience every time he kicks the ball! Wearing cleats that are too narrow will lead to calluses, ingrown toenails, blisters, and corns, which are really hard to get rid of once they develop!
You can find the soccer cleat style for kids that will fit a child with wide or extra wide here:
NEVER fit your child in longer cleats to compensate for the width. This will only make them more likely to fall in the field, which WILL lead to injuries. There are wide and extra wide soccer cleats available for kids, so STOP fitting your kids’ cleats too long!!!
Below you can find a selection of the best fitting children soccer cleats, and the first TWO choices from the left are the ones that comes in wide and extra wide widths:
All of these soccer cleat styles fit “true to size”, which means that you need a half a size longer of the size that your child measures in the shoe measuring scale in order to allow for growing room.
My Child Wants To Quit Soccer Because Of His or Her Foot And Leg Pain!
I have actually helped several children who were ready to quit soccer because their feet and legs were hurting after soccer games or practice. I will say that 80% of the time the pain comes from wearing the wrong pair of shoes. The other 20% comes from your child needing extra support in his soccer cleats.
Children who have flat feet or rolled ankles are putting pressure in their feet and legs where they are not supposed to! Have you ever heard of SuperFeet inserts? They are for children who have foot or leg pain due to flat feet or tight muscles!
This type of shoe insert fits inside your kid’ cleats and work wonders for children who are experiencing foot and leg pain after playing soccer. I wrote a post where I describe these type of inserts and how to fit them inside your child’s cleats. You can find that post here:
Don’t let your child quit soccer just because he is experiencing foot or leg pain! I have helped hundreds of children who were ready to quit soccer by fitting them in the right pair of soccer cleats with the right pair of inserts!
The Best Way To Tie Your Kid’s Soccer Cleats!
It was not until I started working at a children’s shoe store (I have been working there for over 6 years now) that one of my co-workers taught me the BEST way to tie my shoes when running or playing a sport. The method is called “reverse the shoe laces technique”. It works wonders, and I use this tying method on my own shoes as well as the kids’ shoes that come to the shoe store.
This method puts more pressure in the instep of the foot and pushes your kids’ heel back, which ends up securing his or her ankles. We use this method especially for our children who wear orthotics. A common problem with orthotics is that when an extra shoe insert or an orthotic is fitted inside the shoe, the foot is raised up, giving the child the impression that the foot is coming out of the shoe!
I describe how to implement this tying method in this post:
Ankles are a major area in the body that takes a beating in game of soccer. It is important to choose a soccer cleat with a firm heel counter, to reduce the impact on the ankles every time our children are running around the field!
Let’s Not Forget About The Importance Of Socks!
Wearing the right type of socks is also really important if we want to keep our kids feet healthy while playing soccer! The right type of socks provide extra cushioning and padding in areas where our feet are feeling the most pressure. When I played soccer, I used to have blisters all over my toes from not wearing the right type of soccer socks!
If your child is having blisters or calluses, try soccer socks and you will see the difference! I describe the best type and the importance of soccer socks in this post:
