Trending Shoes for Kids in 2026 – Stylish and Functional

Last updated: May 2026 | By Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter

Are you looking for stylish shoes for your child but not sure which styles are actually worth buying this year? You are in the right place.

As a certified children’s shoe fitter with over 10 years of experience, I keep a close eye on what is trending in kids’ footwear — not just from a fashion perspective, but from a fit and foot health perspective as well. My goal is always the same: help you find shoes your child will actually want to wear, that also fit their feet correctly and support healthy development.

In this guide I will walk you through the biggest kids’ shoe trends for 2026, the most popular brands, the best specific styles I recommend, and — most importantly — which styles work for different foot shapes.

Children’s footwear has evolved significantly this year. Here are the five biggest trends I am seeing both at the store and across the market:

1. Retro Sneakers Are Dominating

Retro-inspired silhouettes continue to be the biggest trend in kids’ sneakers for 2026. Styles like the New Balance 9060, Adidas Samba, and Nike Air Max 95 are among the most requested shoes I see kids asking for. The chunky, vintage aesthetic appeals to older kids especially, and parents tend to like them because they are more durable than ultra-slim performance styles.

2. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials

Parents are increasingly asking for shoes made from recycled materials or with eco-friendly construction. Brands like New Balance and Adidas have expanded their sustainable lines significantly this year. If this matters to your family, look for shoes labeled with recycled uppers or plant-based outsoles.

3. Bold Colors and Expressive Designs

Gone are the muted tones. In 2026, kids’ shoes are leaning into vibrant, personality-driven colors — electric blues, vivid greens, iridescent finishes, and bright pops of orange and yellow. For girls, metallic and glitter finishes remain very popular. For boys, bold two-tone color combinations are trending. Gender-neutral styles in beige, gray, and white are also rising as parents shop for versatile everyday shoes.

4. Slip-On and Easy-Entry Styles

Convenience continues to drive purchasing decisions. Slip-on sneakers, Velcro-closure shoes, and wide-opening designs are trending across all age groups — not just toddlers. Busy parents and kids who dress independently love styles that go on and off quickly.

5. Chunky and Thick-Soled Styles

Platform sneakers and shoes with thicker, chunkier midsoles are fashionable across age groups in 2026. From a foot health standpoint, I actually welcome this trend — thicker, more substantial outsoles tend to provide better cushioning and support than ultra-thin, flimsy soles. Just make sure the shoe still bends at the ball of the foot, not in the middle.

What Colors Are Trending for Boys and Girls in 2026?

For boys: Bold, saturated colors are dominating — electric blues, hunter greens, vivid oranges, and two-tone black-and-white combinations. I am also seeing more boys gravitating toward purple and lavender tones, which were less common in past years.

For girls: Bright pinks and purples remain perennial favorites, but iridescent finishes, holographic materials, and metallic silvers and golds are having a big moment. Aqua blues and sunny yellows are also trending.

Gender-neutral: Simple, clean colorways in cream, beige, and gray are increasingly popular with families who prefer versatile shoes that work with any outfit.

Here are the brands I see most requested at the store this year, and what you need to know about each:

New Balance remains my top overall recommendation for kids who need proper support. Their shoes come in multiple widths (medium, wide, and extra wide), which is rare among major brands. The 9060 and Fresh Foam styles are the most popular right now.

Nike is always in high demand, especially the Air Max and Pegasus lines. Keep in mind that most Nike styles run on the narrower side and are not ideal for children with wide or extra wide feet.

Adidas is having a strong year thanks to the resurgence of retro styles like the Samba and Superstar. Like Nike, most Adidas styles fit medium feet best.

Converse and Vans remain staples in the casual and school shoe category. Both brands run long — I recommend ordering a half size down from your child’s measured size.

HOKA is increasingly popular with parents who want maximum cushioning and support, particularly for children who are on their feet all day.

And Now to the Specific Shoe Recommendations

Below are the styles I am currently recommending to families at the store. I have noted which foot shapes each style can accommodate so you can find the right match for your child.

The Air Zoom Pegasus (images and links below) and Little Posite One are shoes that combine function and the ever-important cool factor. Both of these models can accommodate children with medium or wide feet. If your child has wide feet and high insteps then I suggest skipping these styles and looking into the New Balance ones. These two Nike shoes won’t work for children with extra wide feet.

New Balance has been doubling down on comfort and support, which are crucial for growing feet. Their two most popular styles this year are the 9060 and the Coco utility sport. These shoes can fit children with medium or wide feet, and they can accommodate children with high insteps.

Adidas strikes a balance between classic looks and cutting-edge technology. Their most popular shoe is the Superstar and they also have the performance-oriented Ultraboost. I am sure you might have heard or seen these shoes before. The Adidas shoes below can fit children with medium or wide feet.

Converse Chuck Taylors are a durable and fashionable choice that kids and parents love. Just make sure you order a half size smaller than your child’s current foot size as this particular shoe style fits really long.

Vans remains a staple in the skater and casual shoe scene. Their slip-ons and Old Skool designs have seen a resurgence, now meshed with improved comfort technology, ensuring that kids can play just as hard as they rest.

How to Make Sure a Trendy Shoe Still Fits Correctly

This is the part most parents skip — and it is the most important. A stylish shoe that does not fit properly can cause foot pain, blisters, and even long-term foot problems. Here is what to check before buying any trending style:

Firm heel counter: Press on the back of the shoe. It should feel firm and sturdy, not soft and foldable. This keeps your child’s heel in place and provides ankle stability.

Flexibility at the right place: The shoe should bend at the ball of the foot (where the toes meet the foot), not in the middle of the arch. A shoe that bends in the middle offers poor support.

Proper length: There should be about a thumb’s width of space between your child’s longest toe and the front of the shoe.

Correct width: The shoe should not squeeze the sides of the foot or create visible bulging at the toe box. If your child has wide or extra wide feet, always look for shoes labeled W, XW, or 2E, 4E.
