Wide Football Cleats for Boys – They DO EXIST!
Do you have a child with wide or extra wide feet that needs a pair of football cleats? Do you feel like you always try several different pairs but you always end up empty handed? I have put together a selection of the best wide football cleats for boys based on my 10 years of shoe fitting experience.
I have been contacted by several parents who want to know if football cleats that can accommodate the foot shape of children with wide or extra wide feet actually exist. Finding a pair of football cleats for a child with wide or extra wide feet can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience. The good news is that I have found certain styles that provide rounded toe-boxes and extra depth and will fit children with wide feet and high insteps.
I decided to create this article to help those parents who have children with wide or extra wide feet and are having a hard time finding a pair of football cleats that fit. The issue with most cleats is that they are made to fit the shape of the athlete’s foot, which means that they all fit on the narrower side.
If you’re pressed for time, you can jump directly to a selection of wide football cleats for kids.
What Makes the Football Cleats that I Recommend Ideal for Wide Feet?
1️⃣ Rounder Toe-Boxes to help prevent your kids’ toes from rubbing against one another or the side of the shoes. Do you notice how much rounder the toe-box of the shoe on the right is compared to the shoe on the left?
2️⃣ Extra depth to accommodate your child’s high instep. Take a look at the difference in depth between the football cleat I recommend and a different style.
Don’t let sports stores tell you that there are no football cleats capable of accommodating children with wide feet. Certain football cleats can fit a child with wide or extra wide feet, but to get the full benefits that the cleats have to offer, you must provide your children with the correct shoe size.
Are You 100% Sure of Your Child’s Foot Size? – Get it Right!
I recommend parents take their children to their local children’s shoe store to have their child’s feet properly sized and the shoes properly fitted. The issue is that most stores have been closing down and parents need to end up buying their kids’ shoes online. There is nothing wrong with this, but you must know your child’s exact foot size to know what size to order.
If after looking at that resource you still can’t seem to identify a shoe store in your area, then proceed to take a look at a virtual resource I created that describes the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home.
I only review shoes that I have fitted before, otherwise, I wouldn’t know how well-made they are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at a selection of the best wide football cleats for boys. Why is it Important for Children to Wear Cleats? – Let’s Find Out!
If you ask a coach of any sport such as soccer, baseball or football, they will give you the two most important reasons why children must wear cleats when playing sports instead of their regular sneakers:
1️⃣ It’s extremely hard to learn good form in sneakers.
2️⃣ Sneakers will be extremely slippery on grass, especially when the grass is dewy or wet.
Some parents are skeptical of providing their children with cleats since they are afraid that they might be more prone to hurting themselves.
I have spoken with several football coaches, and they all agree that children that don’t wear cleats tend to slip and fall when the grass is wet which puts them at risk of injuries, being stepped on or just getting hurt from the fall itself.
They all emphasized how they have seen children get hurt from not wearing cleats, but have yet to see one injured due to wearing them. That’s why it’s so important to wear a pair of cleats that fits and also that provides good traction.
What’s the Recommended Age for Kids to Start Wearing Cleats?
Some children start wearing cleats at the age of four, but it really depends on whether the league and the coach require them or not. However, the best way to figure out when your child needs to start wearing cleats is to ask the coach of the team.
The coach is the person who will be able to tell you when is the perfect time for your child to start wearing them.
Also keep in mind that if the rest of the children are wearing cleats, it’s probably a good idea that you provide your child with a pair as well.
Can Kids Wear Soccer or Baseball Cleats for Football?
This is a common question that parents usually ask me at the shoe store where I work for.
Children can wear their baseball cleats for football, but not their soccer cleats. However, I always recommend parents to get their kids a sport specific shoe for whichever sport they will be playing.
Just to be clear, here are the characteristics that football cleats have:
1️⃣ They have a toe stud.
2️⃣ They have thicker outsoles.
3️⃣ They have two studs at the back of the heel and five under the toe and ball of the foot.
4️⃣ They come in three different cuts: low, mid, and high.
Football Socks for Kids – Extra Cushion for Your Kids’ Feet!
Football socks act as a barrier between your kids’ feet and the cleats, playing a key role in keeping your kids’ feet healthy. It’s important that the socks that you provide for your child are made of breathable materials, dry quick, and that they also provide extra cushion below the toes and the ankle of your child’s feet.
If you want to keep your kids’ feet cool and comfortable when they are out playing on the field, certain socks come with Dri-fit fabrication that wicks sweat and moisture away from your kids’ skin.
Certain football socks provide targeted cushioning on the footbed for shock absorption and it will reduce the friction between the foot and the cleat. Below you can find a selection of the best football socks for children:

Did you know that the “growth plates” in kids’ bones don’t finish closing until they reach the ages of 15 to 17 in boys and 13 to 15 in girls? When these “growth plates” are stressed during a particular activity or sport, they become more susceptible to injury.
It is extremely important to wear shoes that fit properly if you want to keep your kids’ feet and legs healthy. When children are playing a particular sport, they are stressing out their feet and legs at a whole different level.

Have you tried this football cleat for your child with wide or extra wide feet? Is there another football style that you recommend for children with wide or extra wide feet? Please share your thoughts and experiences below so other parents can benefit from them.
My son has VERY flat feet. He recently started playing football. He is experiencing pain in both of his feet. I’m afraid that it may be due to ill fitting cleats. What would you recommend for a child with extremely flat feet playing American football? He usually wears a men’s size 10 in sneakers. Thank you
Hello Kelly,
Unfortunately, most cleats don’t provide a lot of support, but some models do provide firmer heel counters than others. I suggest fitting your son in a pair of football cleats that provides a firm heel counter and a stable base of support with removable insoles to fit a sport insole for extra support. However, before I can recommend specific football cleats and sport insoles I would need to know your son’s exact foot shape (narrow, medium, wide, extra wide).
I am looking for wide cleats for a 6 year old boy who wears a size 4.5. Are there any cleats that actually come in a wide at this size? If not do you have any recommendations?
Hello Krystal,
Yes, there are two models that are available in wide widths:
Option 1 Available in wide widths
Option 2 Available in extra wide widths
Hi,I’m a mother of a little boy with a dream to play football, he needs cleats that will accommodate him and his needs. I am open to suggestions his insert barely fits is day to day shoes and cleats are mostly narrow, someone please help or point me in the right direction maybe I can get him custom made.
Hello Michelle,
Are you looking for an extra wide football cleat that can accommodate your son’s foot shape? If you tell me which country you are contacting me from I can send you specific shoe recommendations. You can also contact me via email: fittingchildrensshoes@gmail.com
What can you recommend for an 11 year old boy that wears a 6.5. He has wide feet and has the heel pain due to growth plates according to the doctor. I can’t seem to find any wide football cleats in that size.
Hello Lisa,
The reason why you can’t find any football cleats in that size is that most kids football cleats stop at a shoe size 6. This means that you need to look into the men’s version of the shoes. I found one option that is available in wide widths (W) in your son’s shoe size:
Option 1
Option 2 This option is not available in wide widths but it is available in your son’s shoe size (choose 6.5 and the available color will show up)
I suggest that you apply this shoe lacing technique: How to Tie Shoes for Heel Pain – The Most Effective Way!
If your son’s heel pain persists you should consider fitting an orthotic or a heel cup inside of the shoes. The heel cup will be the most affordable and sometimes effective option as it provides targeted cushion and support right below the heels. You can learn more about the best heel cups for children with heel pain here: Heel Cups for Shoes – How to Stop Heel Pain!
